Chapter Nine

The next morning, with Rayne outside their cabin on the phone, Nick took advantage of the chance to talk to his brothers. Glancing around the table, he saw Caleb’s brow was creased and Dalton’s lips were thin. They had to be thinking the same things he was. “What do we do about Rayne? She’s determined to live in her cabin on her own. I want her here.”

He flinched. That was the first time he’d said it aloud. He’d tried to convince himself it was just sex, but his emotions went beyond that or his need to protect her. The energy in the house was happier with her there. He was happier.

“We need to think of her safety first.” Dalton looked to Caleb for comment. “She’s not going to be happy no matter what we decide.”

Dalton tapped his fingernail against his mug, the sound of which grated on Nick’s nerves and made him want to snap the table in two. Whenever his brother was deep in thought—most of the time, in other words—he tapped that nail on anything solid. He should just get up and pace silently like most people.

Shit, it wasn’t Dalton’s fault he was so on edge. Nick’s wolf had been pacing constantly during the day, and after they had sex each night, he’d escape the house before his wolf broke free to take a run through the forest. It acted as though it could outrun whatever nagged at it, but each night ended with him shifting back unsatisfied.

They were all antsy with her around. But better having her here than in her cabin out of their sight, where they couldn’t protect her as easily.

“Once her house is ready I’ll move in with her, protect her,” Nick announced.

Dalton shook his head. “If the Emmersons want her gone, there’s nothing we can do to keep her safe. The threat of her being one of the alpha pack is too great.”

The hair on the back of Nick’s neck bristled and he scratched. “It’s looking like she’s not a shifter. Do either of you know how long it might take for her wolf to appear? I think it would have happened by now.”

They shrugged.

Dalton said, “I’ve never paid attention to the half-shifters. But it’s different with Rayne. They all grew up on the mountain, so they knew of the possibility from the start. Wouldn’t her wolf have come out when she visited here as a kid?”

“I’ve considered that,” Caleb said. “Unless the Emmersons know something we don’t, they won’t wait to find out.”

“She’s gonna be so pissed when we insist she doesn’t live on her own.” Nick paced again.

“I know, but we’ll just have to convince her.” Caleb glanced from one brother to the other. “Show her we want more than sex.”

Nick stared at his older brother. Always the irresponsible one—which surprised everyone to see in the oldest—Caleb never let on that he felt something deeper than sex where a woman was concerned. Rayne really was different to make them all see her in the same light.
